Letter from President Newman

 Dear Parents and Leaders -

Sister Newman and I are so very grateful for all you do to support and sustain your missionaries, while they serve their God. Your generous gifts were such a blessing to so many missionaries here in the West Virginia Charleston Mission. Sister Newman and I and our Senior Couples enjoyed spreading a little Christmas cheer, thanks to your support.  The Sisters and Elders now have a renewed sense of what Christmas is all about.

The Lord’s work presses forward in this part of the Lord’s vineyard. Although some missionaries may feel from time to time they are in captivity, nothing could be farther from the truth. They may go outside, teach lessons at the church, attend sacrament meeting, exercise outside, shop and visit members and friends as long as they remain outside. They are blessing the lives of so many good people. As missionaries surrender to God’s will and timing, they are used as instruments in His hands to gather Israel as He hastens the work during this global pandemic.

Here are a few facts that substantiate the progress being made by all who serve here. Through faith in Jesus Christ and relentless effort, your sons and daughters have achieved their baptismal goal for the remaining four months of last year. We found and taught 1020 new people in Sept and Oct. They contacted 8015 people on Dec 19th, a day of contacting. They will have 19 baptisms this month of January and that is a 1 year high for a single month and that puts the month of January 2021 in the top 17% for the last 36 months.  We taught 155 new people last week and had 88 friends attend sacrament. Both totals for these indicators are record setting. We have a goal to baptize 25 people in March and that goal, when achieved, will be a three year high for a single month. We are planning a day of purposeful invitations on 30 January 2021. Our goal is to have 3000 meaningful invitations. The invitations may include setting a date for baptism, inviting a friend to a lesson, inviting someone to church, inviting someone to receive their patriarchal blessing and other purposeful invitations. We could not be more pleased for all the terrific efforts leading to these accomplishments.

On another note, I failed to notify all of you of a change in missionary communication that took place in early December. Better late than never!

Missionaries are blessed to have weekly communication with you through letters, emails, text messages, online messaging, phone calls, and video chat. With love and gratitude for your flexibility, we are now reemphasizing the standard of weekly communication found in Missionary Standards for Disciples of Jesus Christ. As noted in the handbook, your missionary should initiate all text message conversations, online messaging, phone calls, and video chats on his or her preparation day. Should you need to contact your missionary first, however, please contact the mission president beforehand. We are deeply thankful for you and the wonderful support you give your missionary.

One final update regarding missionaries traveling to their originally assigned missions. Sister Newman and I have been so blessed to serve with so many internationally assigned missionaries. Upon our arrival, the mission did not include one set of missionaries assigned to speak a non-English language. What a joy it has been to hear missionaries pray in so many different languages. We’ve tried our best to create virtual study groups for language study and I must report that many are making tremendous progress learning the language of their original mission assignment. Most of our African assigned missionaries have departed and are now serving in African countries. In limited numbers, some missionaries assigned to Chile, Brazil, Italy, Japan and Mexico have departed. Some days Sister Newman and I feel like a mini MTC as we ensure that vaccinations, COVID tests, visas, passports and other records are complete for each departing missionary. We still have over 100 missionaries awaiting their countries to open. Nevertheless, the vast majority of them have both feet well planted in this mission. God bless them all.

We love your missionaries and we are so very grateful to serve with them at this time and in this place.

God bless you and Hurrah for Israel!

January 31, 2021 Sunday Sacrament Talk

Hello brothers and sisters,

I’m Elder Toma and I’ve been serving in the Charleston West Virginia mission for about 2 months now. But I’m originally from Gainesville Virginia so this is very close to home for me. I was asked to talk about how being on a mission has made me more Christ- like.

So, to start talking about that I would like to share a scripture with you, the scripture is in 3 Nephi 18:24.

24 Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do. Behold ye see that I have prayed unto the Father, and ye all have witnessed.

So that scripture relates to becoming more Christ like because when we think about it, we call Jesus Christ the Light of the world. and that relates to missionaries in a big way because as missionaries we represent Jesus Christ and, in a sense, become a light for others so they can come unto Christ.

Another way I've seen myself become more Christ- like is by doing service. A great example of this is when me and my companion were walking to our car one day when we saw an old couple stuck in the middle of the road. So, me and my companion ran over to see what had happened. Apparently, their car had a bad alternator and the battery had died as well. So, me and my companion Elder Stowe helped push the car out of traffic and into safety. Afterwards the old couple thanked us and noticed the missionary tags we had on our jackets. And said, “Aren't you the Mormon?” To that we replied yes and asked about how they knew. They said that they had some friends that went to the Mormon Church up in Roanoke where they lived. We said that was awesome and wondered if they would like to talk about it a little. And they replied yes. Afterwards we gave them a Book of Mormon and got their contact info and waited with them until the tow truck arrived to fix their car. Then me and my companion said goodbye to the old couple and went home.

I have a firm testimony that being on my mission has made me a better person and more Christ-like and that serving others makes all of us Christ-like as well.

January 24, 2021 Good Week with ZL Exchanges

Hello everyone!  This last week was pretty interesting. I went on exchanges with the ZLs, Elder Dennies and Elder Mclaws which was pretty fun except for the times when Elder Dennies drove the car.

Facebook Video Posts

Other than that though it was a pretty uneventful week.  Most of the investigators had to cancel meetings for some reason or another. I have also started Come Follow Me with Elder Stowe, so that's been cool going over the Doctrine and Covenants scriptures. I also talked to a senior member who wanted to talk about the first discussion in Come Follow Me which was awesome. She had a lot to say about it and so did I so we talked for almost 2 hours. Anyway that's my week so I'll talk to you guys next week.

January 18, 2021 Great week - feeling the Spirit

Hey everyone,

This past week has been pretty fun but snowed a lot here.  Elder Stowe and I built a snowman for a video on Facebook. We actually now have to be the ones who are in charge of Motivation Monday videos and so we edit them and have are own little video in them as well.

I have also felt the spirit strongly this week as I phone taught 30 people just by calls and taught a lesson to Joy who is really awesome. I found a pretty iconic scripture while I was studying that I really like its Psalms23.

Anyway that's all I got for this week.  Love you guys and talk to you soon.

January 4, 2021 Happy New Year!

Hey everyone.  It's been a pretty good week.  This week and today I had to drive 3 hours to bring Elder Marks to a hospital for the tics (neurological) that he's been having. But other than that it's been pretty quiet.

I planned a lesson for Joy but she wasn't there when we came over so that was a bummer. I have also been studying faith and repentance lately because that is what I was planning to teach Joy.

Elder Stowe and I celebrated New Year's Eve by ordering a couple pizzas.  Talked to mom and dad on New Year's Eve.

We are hoping that now that the holidays are over that we can start teaching more again.

Anyway love you guys and hope everything is going all right.

 Love- Elder Toma
